The
following two sets work through two different scenarios
using the phoenix eye fist. The techniques can be
viewed be clicking on the video clips below, or by
following the picture series to the right and below.
The article
below contains more information on training and using the phoenix eye fist
and was published in the November 2002 issue of Warriors Way

1st technique

1a. The opponent (right) throws a left
jab towards Sifu Garry (left). Sifu Garry deflects with a
right hammerfist, closing the opponent’s centerline.
Notice that Sifu Garry’s left phoenix eye fist is snaking
under preparing to strike! This is to be done as one
technique.
|
|

1b.
Sifu Garry quickly half-steps in towards the opponent and
locks his knee/leg with his, to up root and throw the
opponent off balance. Sifu Garry’s left phoenix eye punch
slides up the arm, keeping pressure and pushing the
opponent further off balance whilst attacking the ribs
with his right phoenix eye fist. This technique is done
with Geng Jak Ging (shock power).
|
|

1c.
This is the relaxed transition between the soft (yau)
state to a hard (kung) move. This move is done from a very
short distance away, or even touching the opponent.
The distance in this picture is to show you Sifu Garry’s
hands and to demonstrate that he still has control over
the opponent’s body as he has bridged via the leg.
|
|

1d.
Sifu Garry explodes into a cutting hand technique to the
throat and lower ribs as he pushes forwards in his stance
and penetrates the opponent’s centre. The cutting hand
strike will saw across the throat, using the whole forearm
from the hand to the elbow. Simultaneously Sifu Garry’s
right palm and forearm will sink and cut across the body
in a motion that resembles cutting the opponent in half.
This technique is called gou gin sau (scissor hands) or
can be called seip sau.

2nd technique

2a. As the opponent (left) reaches forward, Sifu
Garry opens up his inside centerline by flicking
outwards with his phoenix eye fists, controlling his
forearm bridges.
|
|

2b.
Sifu Garry rebounds off the opponent's inner forearms,
stepping in with two vertical phoenix eye punches.
This can be a deadly technique.
|
|

2c & d.
After hitting the opponent, Sifu Garry seizes his left
wrist and uses a smashing bridge technique (soy kuil)
just above the elbow to break the arm.
|
|

2e.
Using sinking power Sifu Garry’s right arm rebounds of
the opponent's arm in a sawing motion, striking the
side of the head with a phoenix eye fist. There are
many pressure points on the face that could cause
serious injury, but even a hit that is not
specifically aimed at a point will cause pain.
|
|

2f.
Sifu Garry launches forward, driving his knee up and
in towards the opponent's heart.
|
|

2g.
Immediately after the knee (without dropping the leg)
Sifu Garry side kicks to the opponent's inner lead
leg.
|
|

2h.
The opponent drops to the ground as Sifu Garry lands
his leg and sinks, while putting pressure on the
opponent's shoulder to retain control or dislocate.
