Sifu Garry Hearfield

Sifu Garry Hearfield was born in Sydney, Australia in 1969.  At the age of eight he began his martial arts training in Judo before moving on to study various other Korean and Japanese arts as well as boxing and kickboxing.  He began fighting in tournaments at the age of 15, winning the gold medal in the Australian Hapkido Tournament.  During the tournaments, Sifu Garry became aware of the many Kung Fu styles that existed, and in 1985 began searching for a more traditional system than the martial art he was practicing.  Sifu Garry came across a Kung Fu school in the centre of Chinatown (Sydney) that had everything he was looking for, so he began learning under Master Leung Cheung at The Australian Shaolin Yau Kung Mun Martial Arts Academy.  In 1988 the Master closed down the Chinatown school to retire from publicly teaching Kung Fu, although Sifu Garry Hearfield continued to train privately under Master Leung Cheung.  In 1992, Sifu Garry was given the title of Sifu under Master Leung Cheung. The Master saw Sifu Garry as a person of good character to whom he could pass on this knowledge and in 1998 he made him a Bai Shi (closed door disciple).

After becoming interested in Taoism through his Master, Sifu Garry was ordained as a Taoist monk at the Ching Chung Taoist Temple in Sydney in 1992.  Sifu Garry now teaches his students in Taoist methods of health and living.

In 1994 Sifu Jen Sam and Sifu Garry Hearfield formed the International Shaolin Yau Kung Mun Association.  They represented Yau Kung Mun Australia in Hong Kong at the 70th Anniversary of the Grandmaster Ha Hon Hung Sports Association (YKM Kung Fu), and demonstrated to the current Grandmaster Ha Kwok Cheung, and other distinguished Kung Fu Masters.  Sifu Garry has trained the complete system of Yau Kung Mun, including the herbal and healing information that is an important aspect of the style.  He has traveled to China and Hong Kong many times to train and gain more knowledge of Yau Kung Mun, and has trained with the current Grandmaster Ha Kwok Cheung (Grandmaster Ha Hon Hung’s son).  Sifu Garry has trained many people in the martial arts field, including teachers of established Martial Arts schools.  He is currently training security firms and people in the police force, as well as running his own Kwoon in Sydney.  Sifu Garry teaches all aspects of Yau Kung Mun including: hand forms, weapons, lion dancing and dragon dancing, health and healing, internal training and meditation.  He has also designed a new correspondence course that allows him to teach students all around the world, he currently has students in America, Ireland and Sweden.

He is also undergoing further training himself, to compliment his healing knowledge he is currently studying Reiki healing and Remedial Massage techniques, incorporating both eastern and western traditional styles.
