One Herb Dit Dar Formula

Here is a basic and very commonly used one-herb conditioning formula that will work for iron palm and fist conditioning, as well as for most other conditioning drills. This is an ideal recipe for people who cannot afford an expensive complicated formula.  This can be prepared in your kitchen very simply on a standard hotplate.

It is a water based liniment rather than alcohol or oil, so it may have to be warmed slightly before use to make sure that it is properly absorbed through the skin.

TEI GWUT PEI (Cantonese name)

Pin Yin and Chinese characters are found underneath the picture above right.
Pharmaceutical name: Cortex Lycii Radicis
Botanical name: Lycium Chinense Mill. or L. Barbarum L.
English name: Cortex of Wolfberry Root, Lycium Bark (translation: earth bone bark)
Action:  Tei Gwut Pei enters the Lung, Liver & Kidney meridiens.
Properties: Cold & sweet

This herb can be purchased quite cheaply at any Chinese Medicine Herbal Store, just look for one in your nearest Chinatown.

Directions
Boil some water in a large non-metal saucepan (ie: glass or pyrex) or a Chinese ceramic cooker.   Then add some Tei Gwut Pei and coarse salt at a ratio of 2:1 and boil for 30 minutes.  Leave to simmer on low heat for an additional 10 minutes.  Let the liquid cool until it is a low enough temperature to immerse your hands in it without discomfort (hot, but not scalding).  This mixture can be used over a 24 hour period, but must be reheated  to ensure maximum effect.  Discard after one day, and make more liniment when required.

To use this dit dar liniment in your training, immerse your hands in a small bowl of the liniment before and after conditioning.  Soak and wash your hands in the formula for up to five minutes.  You can pat your hands dry or allow them to dry naturally, ensure that this is not done in front of a fan or in a draft as the cold air can lead to poor circulation and dampness of the bones (fung sup).  Make sure that your hands are completely dry before you begin to train.
